My brother got hit the other day (not at fault). Personally, after seeing it, I think it’s likely his car (05 CRV SE, 125k miles) might get totaled, due to the damage on the quarter panel. What do y’all think?

Probably not totalled, but not cheap.

I’d vote probably not. I’m no body man, but that looks like something a reputable paint and body shop could fix in a day or two.

What’s the problem?
I’d just ask for $500 from the driver that hit him and move on
Lots of cars in worse shape than that

That’s just a battle scar. Take whatever the payout is, and thank them for their time. Buff the paint and call it a day.

Nah. Any self respecting repair shop would pull that rear wing out, filler where necessary and respray the rear wing and rear bumper edge.

I think they’ll write it for repair and likely run $3 grand(ish).

I would disagree, I have had fat less serious damage total my vehicles and they were about this age. Unless your CRV has a weirdly high ACV

unless there’s suspension damage, it won’t get fixed, but we also won’t only take $500

that’s our plan as long as there’s no suspension damage

i mean...im not an adjuster, but panels for this thing have to be pretty cheap at this point.

From my understanding (and the quotes I’ve gotten) it’s painting the parts to match and the labour quoted that makes it crazy

Probably too much for this, but consider taking it to a paintless dent removal business and ask for a quote. That’s if it bothers your brother enough to fix it. If he doesn’t care, great, but I realize lots of people want damage fixed and won’t drive around with that.

My best educated guess from 10 years of driving: that’s a dent

My mother’s ‘02 S80 got hit worse than that a couple years ago, and State Farm just paid to have it fixed, even though the repairs were probably more than the car was worth. Wouldn’t be shocked if it wasn’t a case of “It’s ( comparatively) cheap either way, so just keep the customer happy”.

If it’s a collision that he actually reported, then there is a risk of a writeoff.
If they just worked it out and the person at fault gave him some cash directly, keep the cash and just leave it as-is.

Most shops these days don’t do bodywork like that anymore. All they do is install/weld in new OEM panels... even in cases where it’s an old vehicle like this that isn’t worth much.
As a result, repairs like this are almost always at least a couple of thousand bucks.

Ouch, that sucks. I guess our bodyshops are old school, there are different garages that have their own way of doing things really.

Why would you undervalue damage done to your car to help some guy you don’t know that just hit you!???
Doesnt matter if I drive a 1998 Plymouth Neon with 7 million miles , they need to make me whole again, that means having insurance and using it in an accident.

How
is it undervaluing the damage if it’s just cosmetic? Just pocket the money and don’t fix it

He won’t get it fixed, it just depends on whether he takes the check or if he takes the check and buys the car back

I wholeheartedly agree, beige is hateful color. It’s still an upgrade from his beige 98 Altima though

We’re going through insurance, both parties have State Farm. if it is written off, we’ll just buy it back

Is cosmetic damage just not considered actual damage if the car is "old or cheap"?, Someone damaged your property, therefore they owe you, if the damaged done costs several thousand to fix, they owe you several thousand or a payout. You shouldnt take 500$ if you took good care of your car too help someone out if it means your nice condition car isn't so nice anymore.

Unless you’re planning to literally drive it until it’s junked, fixing it (on someone else’s dime) is worth it for resale alone. Plus then you don’t have to look at a big dent and surface rust in the paint scratches on your car every day.

correct
My car was never so nice to begin with, being a rusty pile of shit. I only paid $500 for it, so I really don’t care too much about it
In fact, that’s actually my biggest fear of getting a new car, that I’d be pissed over minor cosmetic damage. With a $500 beater, I don’t care as much

Sure for you, but to claim with no idea the condition of this car that you might as well just settle for either A, losing money when you sell it down the line, or B losing its cosmetic appeal, you want to be made whole again.
My point was just because something is a 2005 CRV, doesn't mean it's absolutely worthless and you should be lucky to get 500$ from a stranger who damaged your property. If you go through insurance and let's say they total it, in this fictional case they pay out 3 grand and the buy out is around a grand, you make 2k even if you plan to keep driving it and that 2k is what you earned for loss of cosmetic and title status value, that's yours.

it’s a 14 year old honda... you are definitely driving it until it’s junked, somewhere beyond 250k... I got 372k on my ‘01 before I sold it, still running and driving with cold A/C. (Full disclosure , original engine, but not the original tranny, steering rack or cat)

I know it’s capable of that, I just meant the owner’s intentions. I forget sometimes that not everybody has automotive ADD like me.
